Just in Time for the Holiday Season… ‘Aliens on Ice’

“Skate away from her, you bitch!” This is really real folks. Check out the video below…
[From Fear.net]

Now this is the kind of insanity that makes me proud to be a nerd. The Old Murder House Theatre in Austin, Texas specializes in performing movies — usually from the ’80s and ’90s — on stage. Everything from Jurassic Park to Robocop. But the company is now tackling what is perhaps its greatest, and certainly most challenging, work: James Cameron’s Aliens. On ice.

There’s a lot to love in this video: the wigs, the era-appropriate power ballad, the colonial marine armor made of cardboard, the alien made of trash bags… But the best part must be that Newt is played by a fully grown, overweight, bearded man. Well done. If this is what it means to keep Austin weird, may the city never know normalcy.

Find out more at The Old Murder House Theatre’s Facebook page.

#NerdGirls Have More Sex

[via Mashable]

Gamers rejoice: female online gamers are more social, happy, sexually and physically active than their non-gaming counterparts, according to a Harris Interactive survey of 2,000 U.S. adults. Gaming is a stress reliever for most of these women (61%), while 16% game online to connect with others.

This GameHouse infographic, first published in VentureBeat, compares the characteristics of women who game online and those who don’t. The study found that 55% of online gamers are women and 45% are men, although the infographic only details findings about women.

Female online gamers are more social than their non-gaming counterparts. Forty-one percent socialize at least once each day in person compared to 31% of non-gamers. They’re also more active on social networks, with 88% of gamers socializing online at least once each day compared to 71% of non-gamers.

More than half of all gaming women (64%) are either married or live with a partner. Fifty-seven percent have sex and 38% have sex at least once a week. Non-gaming women are less sexually active, as 52% have sex and 34% have sex at least once a week.

Thirty-eight percent of female gamers, compared to 28% of non-gamers, have children under the age of 18. The most popular time of day for gaming is between 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., possibly after many moms have put their children to sleep.

Are you surprised by the positive behaviors, such as being more social and happy, associated with online gaming?

The Star Trek Crew watching Star Wars. Genius!

Here’s a hilariously awesome video of Captain Picard and the rest of the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew watching and analyzing the movie Star Wars: Episode IV on his bridge of the Enterprise.

The video was brilliantly spliced together by Taylor Culbertson who spent who knows how long going through and watching Star Trek to find just the right comentary and reactions to fit in with the scenes they were watching in Star Wars. I love how this all came together and it was awesomely entertaining so I hope you enjoy it! This might just be the greatest thing you see all day!

Got the Right Stuff?

Hey Nerd Ladies and Gents – NASA is recruiting astronaut candidates now until January 27th. Do you have what it takes? Beyond the degree in engineering, mathematics or the physical sciences, being an astronaut requires

“…at least 3 years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience OR at least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft…master’s degree = 1 year of experience, doctoral degree = 3 years of experience. Teaching experience, including experience at the K – 12 levels, is considered to be qualifying experience for the Astronaut Candidate position; therefore, educators are encouraged to apply.”

Also, since the space shuttle is no more, astronauts will be required to fly in the Soyuz space vehicle so you must “meet the anthropometric requirements for both the Soyuz vehicle and the extravehicular activity mobility unit (space suit)”.

Sadly, I don’t make the grade. Although I am quite tiny. Le sigh. One day, Space, I will walk in you.

Michael J Fox is the Man

We all know by now that  Michael J Fox has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and he does not let this stop him. Since he’s been diagnosed, the man has done appearances left and right even guest spots on shows like The Good Wife.

At Fox’s annual A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s event, he busted out the red guitar and did a little song for us. Not just any song though, nope. Johnny B Goode. The exact song he plays in Back to the Future.

Chills. Just to see how even with a disease like Parkinson’s he has the courage to go on stage and be awesome.

Presidential Candidates Explained Through D&D Character Sheets

In 1977, game designer Gary Gygax created Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, defining the modern RPG genre and providing yet another justification for asshole bullies to mercilessly harass nerds. Well, with the coming election absorbing the media’s attention like a gelatinous cube, we here at Live Funny or Die pondered how the lineup of 2012 presidential candidates might fare in Gygax’s swords and sorcery universe. So crack open your monster manual, whip out your 20-sided die, and get ready for a different type of political party, with D&D character worksheets for this election’s contenders.
